Middle School Electives

Electives are an essential element of the middle school experience at Our Lady of Lourdes.

Students have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of interesting electives that are both challenging and fun!

Created to inspire and encourage these bright young minds, electives are also wonderful springboards for exploring new interests and applying learning in unique ways.

Middle School students in each grade level have the opportunity to take up to two electives offered in a school year; as well as the opportunity to repeat some of their favorites. The curriculum is built to grow and expand with the students who are passionate to be challenged if they want to take a class twice.

Electives offered include:

Broadcasting/Journalism

Gissele Tovar/Vanessa Balaguer-Chavez

Students will be taught the skills and knowledge on how to deal with the many challenges of producing news stories at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. Students will research, gather, and analyze information that will be used to create audio and video productions for broadcast to a variety of audiences. Throughout this course, students will learn basic journalistic skills, video production skills, and technological skills.

Coding

Ileana Palacios

Students will experiment confidently, and have fun with coding. They will understand the common, foundation-level concepts that apply in most programming languages before they go on to learn a dedicated programming language, such as Scratch, Python, JavaScript, Ruby, etc. Students will be introduced to a whole new world of digital creativity!

Crafts

Michelle Rodriguez

Art course intended for students who are interested in the creative process. Students will learn about the art and craft of various cultures while creating works of art. Students will get to experience working with a variety of different mediums such as knitting, yarn, etc. while learning multiple techniques.

Dance

Catalina De Atienza/Suzy Sardina

Dance is an elective for those students who make it onto the Jaguarettes OLOL Dance Team. This elective provides students with an opportunity to explore different techniques, choreography, and movement. The elective might cover topics on cultural and religious influences and artistic expression through movement. It is a great elective for students to express themselves creatively and improve their physical coordination.

Logic

In this elective, we will work on developing memory skills, the ability to plan, test ideas, and problem-solving. We will reinforce connections between brain cells, and improve mental speed and short-term memory. So get ready to be PUZZLED!

Mind, Body & Soul

This course is designed to help students understand why exercise and fitness are important in developing a healthy and active lifestyle. The course emphasizes successful strategies formaintaining good cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance and body composition.

¿Que Pasa?

Lily Bolivar

Students will converse in Spanish about different aspects of foreign countries. It will incorporate phrases and casual greetings in an informal manner, allowing students to build confidence when speaking in Spanish without hesitation. They will discuss differences in cultures, traditions, and celebrations and participate in various activities including cooking and dancing. They will also be debating current issues.

Sports Management

David Contreras

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of project management and its application to sports events. Project management is a strategic and systematic approach to managing sports as projects.

STREAM

Angela Santalo/Suzy Sardina

STREAM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in six specific disciplines — science, technology, religion, engineering, arts, and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STREAM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. Students in this course will be using hands-on experiments to discover these disciplines.

Visual Arts

Elizabeth Baez

Students will study a wide range of two-dimensional and three dimensional art, including drawing, painting, and sculpture. It is designed to expand the traditional knowledge of Fine Art and Design, providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to use different mediums to create original artwork.

Yearbook

Tammy Acosta/Angela Houston

In this course, students will compile, organize, and complete the OLOL yearbook under the careful observation of the yearbook advisor. Students will take pictures, create layouts, write text, sell advertisements, create the 2023-2024 yearbook, and plan the yearbook signing party at the end of the school year, etc. Students may be asked to attend after-school sports and/or activities to photograph these events.
